A local car dealership is in the process of building a more than $4 million and over 24,000-square-foot facility on U.S. 301.

The Rocky Mount Toyota Superstore owned by the Hudson Automotive Group Inc. will begin operations on March 5 in the new building at 943 N. Wesleyan Blvd., said Brent Mattingly, general manager of Rocky Mount Toyota Superstore.

Mattingly said the building will consist of a large customer lounge equipped with Starbucks coffee and free Pepsi products and snacks for all service customers. The lounge also will have dual TVs and an office work station for customers while they’re getting their car serviced to allow them to continue to do their work, Mattingly added.

In addition, the showroom will hold eight cars and a children’s playroom area for parents who are waiting for their cars to be serviced who have their children with them. Mattingly said the children’s playroom area will have a space to play video games and small children toys.

“This is going be a state-of-the-art building and will be the nicest Toyota facility in Eastern North Carolina,” he said. “For servicing, we will have all-new technology to better maintain customers’ cars, and customers will be able to pull directly inside to get their car serviced versus them having to come out in the elements. When we made this purchase, we really made a commitment to Rocky Mount of having the nicest facility in town and giving the best customer experience.”

Mattingly said the new building will allow Rocky Mount Toyota to double its inventory on the lot. Currently, the dealership carries about 200 vehicles but will eventually have more than 400 vehicles on hand, he said. The current building will be torn down and become a showcase lot for all the new and used vehicles.

“We plan on our sales doubling and our service business doubling,” Mattingly said.

The investment into the new building will also allow Rocky Mount Toyota to bring on additional employment. Mattingly said the store currently has 50 employees and will eventually bump that up to between 70 to 75 employees.

“Employment wise, we’re probably going to add another 20 jobs over the next 60 days once the building opens,” he said. “We’re actively seeking sales people, technicians, accounting staff and support staff.”

Mattingly said Rocky Mount Toyota is committed to being more active in the community and doing more community events. He added as part of Rocky Mount Toyota’s grand opening event later this summer, participants from the TV show “American Ninja Warrior” will be on hand.

The new Rocky Mount Toyota Superstore isn’t the only activity happening on the U.S. 301 corridor within the past couple years. Construction is ongoing for the new Sam’s Xpress Car Wash and Exxon Mobil gas station that will be opening sometime this year.

It’s next to the 36,000-square-foot Lidl grocery store that opened last summer. Next door to the supermarket is the Mattress Warehouse that took over 5,800 square feet of space last August. Also, the Waffle House was remodeled last year. In the Sutter Creek Plaza right off U.S. 301, the hardware chain Harbor Freight Tools opened for business last summer.
