A pedestrian was killed Friday night while crossing North Wesleyan Boulevard in front of the Mayflower Restaurant.
David Wheaton Jr., 36, was struck about 7:44 p.m. Friday night by a vehicle on the 1500 block of North Wesleyan Boulevard. Cpl. Mike Lewis of the Rocky Mount Police Department said Wheaton was on the highway when he was struck by a south-bound sports utility vehicle.
Lewis could not confirm Wheaton’s residence, but public records indicate his last address as Nobles Mill Pond Road in Rocky Mount.
Wheaton was transported to Nash UNC Health Care where he succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident. Lewis said no alcohol was involved, but that poor lighting on that stretch of road may have been a contributing factor to what he called “a tragic accident.”
The incident is still under investigation, but no charges have been filed in connection with the event, Lewis said.
