A man and wife died Sunday when their vehicle collided with a train in Whitakers.
Eugene and Dorothy Lyons, of the Battleboro community, were killed at about 2:30 p.m. when their SUV attempted to cross railroad tracks ahead of Amtrak Train 89, the Palmetto, near Nash and Railroad streets.
Dorothy Lyons drove around the safety crossing arm, Whitakers police told reporters Sunday afternoon.
Eugene Lyons was a pastor at a church in Whitakers, according to multiple media outlets.
No one in the southbound train from New York City headed for Savannah, Georgia, was injured. Service was suspended during the crash investigation, according to Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods.
The train remained in place for several hours.
Nash County EMS, Whitakers Fire-EMS, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office and the N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to the crash.
