A local woman had a great start to the new year.

Marion Nellum of Rocky Mount became the first $1 million winner of 2018. Nellum claimed her prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

Nellum chose to take a lump sum of $600,000 instead of taking an annuity of 20 payments of $50,000 a year. After required state and federal tax withholdings, Nellum took home $417,009.

Nellum said she can now take that cross-country train trip that she long desired.

“I’ve always wanted to take a train trip across the country,” Nellum said. “Now I can.”

Nellum bought the winning ticket at Dec. 23 when she stopped by the EP Mart on 1800 Benvenue Road in Rocky Mount, where she purchased a $10 Big Money Super Ticket.

“I was feeling sorry for myself because my holiday vacation request got denied,” Nellum said. “I decided I was going to spoil myself and get a scratch-off ticket.”

Nellum said she couldn’t believe it when she scratched the ticket.

“I had to take it home and get the magnifying glass to make sure I was reading it right,” she said.
