Nash UNC Health Care's main cafeteria will be closed for about three months during renovations.

Known as the Courtyard Cafe, the eatery hasn't been updated since an expansion in 1993, said Dorsey Tobias, the hospital's director of marketing and communications.

“The fresh, contemporary design of the new dining room will dramatically improve the overall dining experience for employees and visitors,” Tobias said. “In addition, serving lines are being streamlined and many of the utensils, plates and food containers will be biodegradable.”

The cafe has been closed since the end of November. Several temporary accommodations have been made for hospital staff, patients and visitors including food trucks, a temporarily cafe, expanded hours for the hospital deli and specialty pizza on certain days.

The hospital is hosting food trucks on certain days during the renovation. Food Trucks will park in the old emergency department ambulance parking area on certain days starting at lunch time and will stay based on demand. The door to the outdoor parking area is on the right just before entering the Women’s Center from the ground floor elevators. Chick-N-Que will be on hand Tuesdays; Moon Runners will be on hand Wednesdays and beginning in January, Lillie Mae's will be on hand Thursdays.

A temporary cafe is located on the hospital's ground floor behind the visitor elevators. It will keep the same hours as the Courtyard Cafe, except it will no longer be open for the late night shift. Temporary cafe offerings include entrees, sides, salad bar, soup, grab-n-go salads and sandwiches, parfaits and desserts, breakfast, bottled beverages, snacks and fruit.

Pizza Inn will be available for lunch on Mondays and Fridays.

Hours for the temporary cafe are Monday through Friday, 6:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. for breakfast; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch. Weekend and holiday hours are breakfast from 6:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Montague’s Deli, beside the main lobby and gift shop, will remain open during the renovation with an expanded set of offerings and additional staff to accommodate folks coming from the Courtyard Cafe.

Breakfast at the deli includes breakfast sandwiches, bars, yogurts, cereal, fruit, milk, coffee, bottled and fountain beverages. Lunch offerings include deli specials, sandwiches, wraps, limited selection of entrée and sides, soup, fountain beverages, brewed tea and bottled beverages. Montague’s Deli will serve the late night shift by offering sandwiches, wraps, small salad bar, soup, popcorn and beverages. There will be a brief break around 1:30 a.m. for re-stocking.

Deli hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. for breakfast; 10:15 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. for lunch and 12 a.m. to 3 a.m. for the late shift. Weekends and holidays the deli will be open 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. for breakfast; 10:15 a.m. to 8 p.m. for lunch and 12 a.m. to 3 a.m.

The majority of hospital employees take their meals back to their break areas, and during renovation, everyone is encouraged to do so. For visitors, more tables and chairs have been moved into the deli dining area.

Vending machines and ATMs in the Courtyard Cafe are being temporarily relocated to the hallway just across from the Nursing Supervisor’s office on the ground floor.
