A Rocky Mount man was killed in a single-car wreck on Saturday when his car careened off a bridge railing and landed underwater in Town Creek.
Christopher Gary Poole, 40, of the 800 block of Arrowhead Lane, died in the wreck that occurred about 7 a.m. on Saturday. First Sgt. Jimmie Silver of the N.C. Highway Patrol said Poole was traveling south on N.C. 111 about three miles from the Pinetops city limits in a 2017 Nissan when the crash occurred.
Poole’s vehicle apparently veered off the roadway to the left and struck a bridge railing, Silver said. The car overturned into Town Creek and became fully submerged. A passer-by attempted to rescue Poole but was unsuccessful. The Rocky Mount Fire Department Dive Team took part in the rescue operation and located Poole in his vehicle where he still was wearing his seat belt. Poole was alone in the vehicle.
The cause of the wreck still is under investigation.
