A wreck late Friday afternoon just outside Tarboro sent a Delaware man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

N.C. Highway Patrol troopers responded to a report of a wreck at 4:08 p.m. on U.S. 64 eastbound near mile marker 486 along with the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office, Tarboro Police Department and Edgecombe County Rescue Squad. Trooper Luke Caskey said the wreck was set off after a car passed a group of motorcyclists.

When the car got in front of the group, the motorcycle drivers were forced to brake, leading one of the drivers to fall off his bike. Caskey said the driver, a 53-year-old man whose identity was not released pending notification of family, sustained head trauma and broken bones and was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

The victim was on his way to Newport at the time of the wreck, Caskey said. He stressed the wreck is under investigation, so he could not comment on whether or not any charges will be filed.
