Organizers of the Harrison Family YMCA’s latest fundraiser are calling the effort a shining success.

The Harrison family YMCA partnered on Saturday with N.C. Wesleyan College to hold the first ever Chance For All Color Run 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run on the college’s campus. The event, which raised money to help families afford various services offered by the YMCA, replaced the previously held Light Up The Runway Glow Run at the Rocky Mount-Wilson Regional Airport and brought out hundreds of runners of all ages.

Harrison Family YMCA Marketing and Development Director Alyssa Matthews said in a previous interview that the organization had a goal of raising $5,000 through the event. It was announced just before the races kicked off that the agency had surpassed that goal, raising approximately $6,000.

Matthews estimated Saturday that at least 300 people were registered for the two untimed races including members of almost every one of N.C. Wesleyan’s athletic teams. That was up from the previous estimate of 175 people being registered. Matthews said the college’s football team was the only one of those teams that was not represented in either event.

Matthews said Saturday that making the event’s races untimed was critical to attracting people to take part.

“By not timing the races, it allows everyone to take a more balanced approach to fitness,” Matthews said. “We just want everyone to have fun.”

Local husband and wife Tyrone and Alexes Greene said they appreciated that focus on fun and fitness versus competition.

“We’ve been trying to change our lives with regard to our heatlh,” Tryone Greene said. “We wanted to see if we could do this since it is our first time doing anything like this. It gives us something that we can try to accomplish.”

Alexes Greene agreed, adding the couple was “very excited” about being in the event not just for their health but also because “it’s for a good cause.”

Before the hundreds who registered took to the college’s campus for the races, they were treated to a little entertainment courtesy of the Mascot Race, which was part of the YMCA’s Glow Run. The Wilson Tobs’ mascot won the race, barely beating out the Chic-Fil-A Cow at the line. Also entered in the race were mascots from the Carolina Mudcats, Zaxby’s and N.C. Wesleyan College.

Along with taking part in the day’s Mascot Race, Zaxby’s, Chic-Fil-A and N.C. Wesleyan College each served as sponsors for Saturday’s event. They were just three of the 12 organizations that served as sponsors. That list also included the Rocky Mount Telegram, First Media Group, Rocky Mount Mills and many others.

Planning for next year’s Chance For All Color Run 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run will start soon. More information on the Harrison Family YMCA is available online at http://www.harrisonfamilyy.org.
