A Virginia-based maker of plastic products has decided to close down its entire operations in Tarboro and lay off more than 200 workers.

General Foam Products Corp., also known as General Foam Plastics, recently notified the N.C. Department of Commerce it has decided to cease operations and permanently close the facility at 501 Daniel St. in Tarboro by the end of the year. The notice states the shutdown of the plant will result in the loss of 215 employees.

The layoffs will begin on Oct. 15 and conclude by Dec. 31, according to company officials. In 2014, General Foam Products announced an expansion, which included plans to add 100 full-time workers to the 48 employees at that time and invest $2.3 million in machinery and equipment at the local facility.
