The body of a man was found in the Tar River early Tuesday morning, according to Rocky Mount police.
Police responded to a report of a suspicious event at 6:06 a.m. at the intersection of Nashville Road and Hammond Street near George R. Edwards Middle School. There, they found an empty motorized wheelchair on the side of the road.
Further investigation found a man believed to be the wheelchair’s owner dead in the Tar River. Police have identified the man as Bernard Grey, 44, of Rocky Mount.
Police said they do not know how long Grey had been in the water when he was found. They said foul play has been ruled out in the case, but the official cause of Grey’s death has not been determined.
Officers said they hope an autopsy will provide more answers about Grey’s death. They did not know how long it would take for the autopsy report to come back from the State Medical Examiner’s office.
