While some local schools are operating on delayed schedules today, most area schools have opted to close for a third straight day due to icy conditions that remain on some roads.
Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools will be closed again today for students and staff, though essential personnel are required to report.
“Secondary roads are still hazardous at this time,” said Dr. Patricia Hollingsworth, chief public information officer for Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools. “After consulting with Sheriff Keith Stone and Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools Facilities Leadership, the superintendent has decided that Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools will be closed for students and staff on Wednesday.”
Edgecombe County Public Schools also will be closed today for students and staff. Edgecombe County Public School officials cite “poor road conditions caused by winter weather” as the reason for the closure.
Both local charter schools have announced closings as well. Rocky Mount Preparatory School and North East Carolina Prep announced closings for today. Also, the weather prompted last night’s North East Carolina Prep’s school board meeting to be postponed until 7 p.m. Thursday.
New Life Christian Academy is the only local private school closed today. Rocky Mount Academy opens at 10 a.m. and Faith Christian School is operating on a two-hour delay. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School opens as usual today.
Both community colleges also are operating on delayed schedules today.
Nash Community College and the Child Development Center will open at 10 a.m. Edgecombe Community College also will open at 10 a.m. on both the Rocky Mount and Tarboro campuses.
Roads are expected to thaw more today when temperatures rise above 50 degrees in some areas. On Thursday and Friday, temperatures are expected to reach the mid-60s.
