"Jesus Christ Superstar" is coming to Rocky Mount.
Local actors will bring the well-known play to the Imperial Centre this spring.
The time is right to perform the show in Rocky Mount as "Jesus Christ Superstar" continues to ride a wave of popularity following a live production of the show in 2018 on NBC, said Brooke Edwards, the center's artistic and managing director
“I love the great mix of people we get who work together,” Edwards said. “It’s truly a community effort, and we have a lot of talent in this area.”
The play's cast is made up of more than 40 local actors, ranging in age from pre-teen to their 60s.
One difference for this performance will be recorded music versus a live rock band, according to a participant.
"Jesus Christ Superstar" is based on the final week of Jesus’ life and deals with themes regarding betrayal, truth and love.
Edwards, who will direct, said the upcoming shows will deal with similar themes but in modern terms.
The classic rock opera will run consecutive weeks in March at the Imperial Centre.
Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. March 8-9 and 2 p.m. on March 10. The show will also run 7:30 p.m. March 15-16 and 2 p.m. March 17.
Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for seniors and students with ID and $7 for youth 12 and under.
