Letter to the Editor: Obama’s economic record clear
Wednesday, July 10, 2019
Trump fans continue to be fooled by Fox News and other biased news sources about the economy under President Obama and President Trump.
When Obama left office on January 20, 2017, the Dow closed at $19,827. When Obama took office on January 20, 2009, the Dow was at 7,949. So the Dow increased by 150 percent during the eight years of the Obama administration.
Since President Trump took office the Dow increased to $26,806 at the close of business July 8, 2019, which represents an increase of about 35 percent for the first two years of Trump’s term in office.
During the last two years of Obama’s term, 211,000 jobs were added to the economy. Under the first two years of Trump’s term, 201,000 jobs were added.
Disgraced Fox News host Bill O’Reilly did much to discredit Obama’s record on the economy, and these Fox News devotees continue to be hopelessly misled.
Our economy has been growing for 10 years, but all the Republicans want to give all the credit to Trump. If they listened to the facts and put aside their bias, they would know the truth.
The economy grew during Obama’s term even with his environmental policies that Republicans think are so terrible. Now Trump has reversed many of those environmental policies and has put the health of the American people at risk. Trump has relaxed standards to the Clean Air and Water Act, withdrew from the Paris Accord on climate change and has proposed gutting the EPA.
Trump has relaxed standards for coal plants so they can spew more mercury into the air and dump dirty wastewater into rivers and streams. This is only one example, there are many more.
A 2018 analysis reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association stated that the Trump administration’s rollbacks and proposed reversals of environmental rules would likely “cost the lives of over 80,000 U.S. residents per decade and lead to respiratory problems for many more than 1 million people.”
Maybe all the pro-life people should care about this loss of life.
If anyone tries to suggest ways to help the environment, the Republicans call them socialists or communists. That’s ridiculous. Communist or socialist countries don’t necessarily have good environmental records. Communist China is known as having horrible pollution, and the U.S. is getting more like China as far as the environment is concerned.
