Letter to the Editor: New city officials should be fiscally responsible
Sunday, April 7, 2019
I would like to thank Mayor Combs and Councilman Rogers for their service to the city.
However, I would also like to say I am not sorry to see you go. You have been a part of the most frequent and largest property tax increases and the most wasteful spending policies I have been exposed to in the 74 years I have lived in the city of Rocky Mount.
You allocated millions of taxpayers dollars for downtown streetscape projects and years later the area looks much the same. There are buildings with broken windows, peeling paint and leaking roofs. You now want to give each building owner $5,000 more of our money to fix up the front of the building only. Are you kidding me? Where is my five grand to spend on my property?
The two of you and six other city officials decided you wanted an event center. You did not give any consideration to the majority of the other 55,000 residents of this city that wanted no part of this unnecessary, money-consuming project. This was never about what was best for the citizens. It was about over-inflated egos and your desire to show us you could and would do whatever you wanted. You would never allow us a vote on this project for one reason, you knew you could never win this vote.
You see, politicians think they are smarter and more informed than the rest of us, therefore we are not intelligent enough to make our own decisions on how our tax dollars should be used.
And by the way, when the city used the eminent domain process to take people’s property for the event center, why was Andre's church building not included in this process? I guess we all know the answer to this question.
Politicians love spending other people’s money. The insatiable tax and spend, tax and spend more or just take whatever you want from the taxpayers policies of this city council needs to stop. Our money is not your money. The taxpayers, our children and our grandchildren will all eventually run out of money. What on earth will you do then?
I hope your replacements will be financially responsible to the needs of of the citizens of this city and not to the financial needs of themselves as some of the current council members appear to be.
