Letter to the Editor: Pray for City Council members

Saturday, February 9, 2019

For quite some time there has been an uneasy concern among Rocky Mount citizens regarding our city government.

Important decisions had to be made to ensure our future development as a thriving, progressive, prosperous city. Some good things have happened in spite of bad decisions, but the future looks bleak.

City councilmen who are responsible for hiring anyone who was already proven to be a bad risk and has caused such a tumultuous upheaval in our city government should admit their mistake and rectify it. Councilmen are chosen to support the will of the people, not to serve themselves. Unless we have a godly government we can expect evil to reign. There will continue to be corruption.

There are some who want to make this problem a race issue, which it is not. It is a good vs. evil issue — right vs. wrong — God vs. Satan. Demonic activity. No one who is doing wrong wants it reported in the newspaper. We should be thankful that evil is exposed so it can be reprimanded and stopped. Newspapers have to check facts carefully to avoid being sued for libel. God will expose sin. He said, "Be sure, your sin will find you out." (Numbers 32:23).

Rocky Mount citizens want city councilmen to make wise decisions which will unite us, not divide us. We all make mistakes which can lead to sin. "Sin is a reproach to any people." (Proverbs 14:34). We should all fear the Lord, our God — "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom". (Psalm 111:10). He is a righteous judge who punishes sin in all of us ... and forgives when we repent.

City councilmen, please do the right thing for this city — lead with godliness. Don't let it get worse. I urge every Christian in this city to begin praying for our City Council and every city government leader daily, and don't stop until God's will is done.

It's another sign of the last days we are living in, when things get worse and worse until Jesus, the Lord returns. It could be soon. We all need to "humble ourselves, pray, seek God daily, and turn from our wicked ways". (II Chronicles 7:14)
