Letter to the Editor: Border wall won't solve problems

Saturday, January 12, 2019

Dear Senator,

You should vote to fund the government so that 800,000 or more federal workers can get paid and normal operations resume. Not paying employees is unethical and it will have disastrous effects on the safety of our air traffic, homeland security, and national parks.

The recent polls of the American people show that most people in the country do not approve of a border wall. In addition, at least 5 percent of the people who voted “Yes” to the border wall said it should be “a high tech surveillance barrier instead of a physical one.” You can see this poll at https://www.isidewith.com/poll/2905607533

Senators have proposed bills to reopen the government, but Mitch McConnell refused to bring them to the floor. I think this is a travesty. It is one more example of how our government is broken.

The president is pushing for the wall because it was a campaign promise that he made without considering the preponderance of the evidence that shows a border wall would not solve our immigration problem. He is being urged by Anne Coulter and Rush Limbaugh to hold his position, even though experts say there is a cheaper and more effective way to protect the border.

Most of the drugs and illegals come though our border in vehicles or shipping containers. Our border checkpoints only do intermittent X-rays of these things. We should X-ray every vehicle and ship if we want to be serious about stopping drugs and illegals. A wall is not going to stop this flow of drugs and illegals who are coming across the border.

The wall is just a symbolic fixture, a symbol of the vanity and hubris of President Trump. Lindsay Graham said that if we build the wall it will be a disaster for President Trump and the Republican Party. This sounds like he only cares about the president and his party, not the American people.

I would suggest that people who want to build this symbolic wall should pay for it themselves. All you need is 5,000 people to give $1 million each, and you have your $5 billion. Anyone who gives $1 million or more can have their name etched on a portion of the wall.

We should expect Trump to pay for several $1 million sections. He probably can spare the money since he doesn’t pay any federal taxes.
