Letter to the Editor: The NRA is not an 'Evil Empire'

Monday, August 13, 2018

There are lots of folks that think the National Rifle Association (NRA) is truly the ‘Evil Empire’ — the root cause of all gun problems in our country. They are, of course, absolutely wrong.

It is true that the NRA is a strong supporter of the Constitution, especially the 2nd Amendment. The NRA is much more than that.

For instance, did you know that the NRA, through local “Friends of the NRA” chapters, supports many diverse programs and activities such as middle and high school competitive shooting teams, 4H programs and Junior ROTC units. Grant application forms for qualifying organizations, such as 501c nonprofits, can be found on the NRA web site.

The current Nash County Friends of the NRA, re-established in 2015, supports the above programs through monetary grant programs. Half of all monies raised by Friends of the NRA chapters are distributed as grant money each year. The other 50 percent supports NRA national programs such as the Eddie Eagle Program — primarily gun safety for kids, Law Enforcement Support Program (established in 1962) and the School Shield Program — a free service to all schools — that focuses on providing a safer learning environment for our children. School Shield is supported by the FBI, the military and retired law enforcement personnel, to mention a few.

Since 2011, Eastern North Carolina chapters have contributed over $1.2 million in grant requests. The last two years, the Nash County chapter has raised over $62.7 thousand for NRA programs, half of which came back to Eastern North Carolina for distribution through the grant fund program.

The Nash County Friends of the NRA needs your support in order to attain —– hopefully exceed — our Grant Fund goal this year. On Thursday, Aug. 16,  we will hold our annual fund raising shindig. For the price of a ticket you will receive a beef brisket and BBQ ribs dinner (includes sides, drink and dessert) plus a chance to win one of five door prizes — one of three guns, a cooler or binoculars.

If you have any questions regarding event tickets or want more info regarding Eastern NC Friends of the NRA programs, please contact Wayland Abernathy at 252-452-9888, Buddy Gwaltney at 919-868-5545, Edward Jackson at 252-450-9090 or Tim Strickland at 252-885-6526.

We thank you in advance for your support!
