Letter to the Editor: Racism flourishes unabated
Wednesday, July 11, 2018
Donald Trump is testing the institution of the presidency unlike any of his predecessors.
He disdains the rule of law and tramples norms of presidential behavior. He is ill-informed, self-destructive and brazen in his abusive attacks on the justice system and the press. Indeed, Donald Trump is chewing this country up and spitting it out in little pieces. The fear of not being re-elected has caused congressional Republicans to stand idly by while Trump tells lie after lie, alienates allies and enables racism to flourish unabated.
Donald Trump is a Bernard Manoff and Theodore Bilbo rolled into one. A con artist and a racist. He continues to successfully con his supports, many of whom are low information voters, into believing him in an unconditional and cultish manner. Many of Trump’s tweets and comments shine a spotlight on his racism and his appointment of people like Jeff Sessions, Betsy DeVos, John Kelly and Steven Miller further substantiate it.
Trump’s Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, has a long history of documented racism. Sessions has now dusted off his KKK robe and is burning crosses in the form of policies that impede the civil rights of people of color relating to policing, criminal justice and immigration. Betsy DeVos, Trump’s secretary of education, has demonstrated her lack of interest in public education. School districts that serve a people of color majority are not on her radar when it comes to advancing educational technology and learning environments.
John Kelly, Trump’s chief of staff, is in stiff competition with his boss when it comes to telling lies and making racially fueled remarks about people of color and undocumented immigrants. This is the same man who misrepresented history when he said Robert E. Lee was an honorable man and the Civil War was about a failure to compromise. In truth, Lee was not an honorable man and slavery was certainly not about compromising. Then there’s Steven Miller, a far-right political activist, who serves as a senior policy advisor for Trump. Miller obviously spends his every waking hour thinking of ways to inflict cruelty on people of color and undocumented immigrants and his racist policy initiatives are put to the test by Trump.
And, it’s Donald Trump who says he is the least racist person you can find yet he is the main character empowering the flourishing of racism unabated.
