Letter to the Editor: Constitution protects God-given rights

In Speak up on Saturday March 10, an anonymous source said, “Julia Manning should stop using that phrase “God given rights” when talking about guns or the Constitution. The constitution was written by people not God. I wish she would stop using that misleading phrase.”

I do not usually consider it important to respond to anonymous sources but I will make an exception in this case.

Our Constitution was put in place not to give us rights but to protect our God given rights.

The Declaration of Independence says our rights come from God, thus the founders of our Republic recognized people’s rights predate and preexist the Constitution.

The Declaration of Independence states:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

What can we learn from these fundamental principles of our Republic?

1. Our rights are unalienable and come from God.

2. The purpose of civil government is to protect our God-given rights.

3. Civil government is legitimate only when it operates by the consent of the people.

If the people of our republic do not like the principles our republic was founded on, we need to change our Constitution.

So the anonymous source was right, men wrote the Constitution; men who realized our rights come from God not men. Therefore they made provisions in our founding documents to insure those God given rights would be protected from a tyrannous government.

God created mankind to be free, even God Himself does not force us to obey Him, the all-powerful creator of heaven and earth allows one person to murder another.

I am thankful our founder’s knowledge of God and His Word was such to recognize our God given freedom.

Laws do not make evil people do what is right. Evil people find a way to do bad things like good people find a way to do good things.

So what is the solution to stopping most evil? Train ourselves and our children to be good people. The training manual is the Word of God (the holy Bible), God’s operation manual for His human being creation.
