Prep football roundup: Firebirds, Jaguars, Patriots earn Week 1 wins

Southern Nash had no trouble picking up a Week 1 win at home on Friday.

The Firebirds defeated Warren County, 65-14, and will host Nash Central next Thursday.

Southern Nash quarterback Matt Foster scored the game’s first two touchdowns on runs of 70 and 54 yards. Foster also threw for a touchdown, a 70-yard strike to Izaiah Walker-Warren.

Running back Quinton Cooley had three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter, and four in the first half. Cooley also returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the opening half. Jah Revis-Alston added a rushing touchdown to cap the Firebirds’ scoring with six minutes left in the third quarter.

Rocky Mount Prep 22, Arendell Parrott Academy 21

Rocky Mount Prep earned its first win of the season after traveling to Kinston.

The Jaguars trailed 21-14 entering the fourth quarter, and scored a touchdown within the first five minutes of the frame to take the lead for good. The Patriots, an 8-man team, are playing their first two weeks against 11-man programs.

St. Pauls 28, North Edgecombe 12

North Edgecombe (0-1) dropped a home non-conference game on Friday.

The Warriors are back in action on Thursday with a road game SouthWest Edgecombe.

Faith Christian 44, Fayetteville Christian 26

The Patriots earned a home win on Friday behind a second-half comeback.

Faith Christian trailed 26-20 at halftime, and after riding out a lightning delay early in the third quarter, found a way to keep Fayetteville Christian out of the end zone while scoring the final 24 points.

FCS running back Shaikey Hardy had 18 carries for 183 yards and three touchdowns, while Hobart Brantley turned 17 carries into 233 yards and three touchdowns.

Hardy also led FCS in tackles with 10. Hardy also added 1.5 sacks.
