The first game of the 2019 prep football season will arrive early this year.

Tarboro and Rocky Mount High announced Wednesday that they have moved up their Week 1 matchup to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Tarboro High School.

The decision was made after taking into account weather forecasts that predict a threat of severe thunderstorms on Friday, which was the original date of the opening-week game.

As of Thursday night no other area teams announced game time changes and will continue with the plan to play Friday.

The last time the Gryphons and Vikings played was in 2004 in Rocky Mount. RMH won that game, 36-0. The Gryphons won their first 12 games that season before losing to Greenville Rose in the playoffs.

The Vikings, meanwhile, finished 8-4 in coach Jeff Craddock's first season as head coach.
