Two more local athletes have signed to play basketball at the next level beginning next season.

Nash Central senior Chris High signed on Thursday with Wake Tech Community College to play basketball. Elsewhere, Rocky Mount Prep senior Samuel Benton agreed to play for Central Pointe Christian, a post-graduate basketball program in Orlando, Fl.

For High, the decision comes after a breakout season where he increased his scoring average by nearly five points per game in the span of a year. High averaged 8.1 per game as a junior, then led the Bulldogs in scoring this past season with a 12.9 average.

In the Eastern Plains Conference tournament, Nash Central lost to SouthWest Edgecombe in the semifinal, but not before battling back to force overtime. High scored a game-high 22 points in the game.

The 6-foot-2 guard will join a Wake Tech team that went 20-13, and advanced to the NJCAA Division II tournament where it lost in the first round.

As for Benton, the Jaguars point guard averaged a team-high 19.1 points per game. Benton guided an RMP team that opened the season 2-8 to the second round of the Class 1-A playoffs and a 12-13 final record.

Benton averaged 11.7 points per game as a junior, and seamlessly slid into the role of primary scorer this past season. With Central Pointe, Benton will retain his four-year collegiate eligibility while playing basketball in various tournament across the country.

The goal is gain exposure, while also playing against talented peers in preparation for college.
