RMA softball needs three wins Saturday to earn state championship

Friday, May 17, 2019

The top seed in the NCISAA Class 2-A softball playoffs is down to its last life.

Rocky Mount Academy suffered a 2-0 loss in 16 innings on Friday to No. 3 Freedom Christian Academy in the semifinals.

With the loss, the No. 1 Eagles were bounced to the losers’ bracket game — a 10 a.m. start — against No. 2 Halifax Academy, which was also handed its first loss of the tournament by Freedom Christian Academy.

The winner of RMA and Halifax Academy will advance to the state championship round, with Game 1 against FCA starting at noon.

FCA won a state championship last season by defeating a one-loss RMA team that came from the losers’ bracket. It was the Patriots second state title in three seasons, and they will have to be beaten twice on Saturday to be denied a consecutive championship.
