Prep roundup: Southern Nash tennis stays perfect with home win

The Southern Nash boys’ tennis team remained perfect this season with Thursday’s 9-0 victory over Wilson Hunt.

Southern Nash (14-0, 8-0) won each match in the home Big East Conference win.

The Firebirds swept all six singles and all three doubles matches, the fifth time they have won via a 9-0 margin this season. Two matches remain in the regular season as Southern Nash tries to complete the undefeated season.

They host Rocky Mount High on Tuesday, and travel to Franklinton on Thursday.

Rocky Mount High 5, Wilson Fike 4

The Gryphons escaped with a tight Big East Conference victory at home.

Rocky Mount High (7-2, 6-1) needed a win from its No. 2 doubles team to break the 4-4 tie and secure the win. The Gryphons pair won 8-6.

The only loss in conference play for RMH has come against Southern Nash, which hosts Tuesday’s rematch.

Wayne Country Day 9, Rocky Mount Academy 0

The Eagles (6-2) were shut out in a home non-conference loss.

Rocky Mount Academy’s streak of six consecutive matches won entering Thursday was snapped.

Baseball

Rocky Mount Academy 14, Harrells Christian Academy 3

Rocky Mount Academy (7-2) won its third consecutive game with Thursday’s home non-conference victory.

Faith Christian 18, Halifax Academy 0, 3 inn.

Faith Christian (8-2, 3-0) secured its fifth win in a row with Thursday’s home NCISAA Coastal Conference win.

The Patriots are back in action at rival Rocky Mount Academy for a 6:30 p.m. start on Tuesday.

Northampton County 7, Rocky Mount Prep 4

Rocky Mount Prep dropped a road Tar Roanoke Conference game.

The Jaguars (0-2, 0-2) are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Northwest Halifax.

Softball

Rocky Mount Academy 11, Harrells Christian Academy 1

Rocky Mount Academy (8-0) pounced early with four runs in the bottom of the first. The early lead grew with two runs in the second and three more in the third.

The Eagles added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to trigger the run-rule victory. Gabbi Stewart had four hits and five RBIs, while Emily Winstead added three hits and three RBIs. Winstead, in the circle, struck out 13 batters and allowed three hits in the win.

Wilson Hunt 22, Northern Nash 2

Northern Nash scored two runs in the third, but it wasn’t enough in the road Big East Conference loss at Wilson Hunt.

The Knights (1-8, 0-5) allowed 11 runs in the second inning, and seven in the third. They are home for two games next week against Southern Nash and Franklinton.

Girls soccer

Nash Central 3, North Pitt 1

Nash Central picked up an Eastern Plains Conference win at home.

The Bulldogs (4-5, 3-1) have now won three in a row and play at Tarboro and SouthWest Edgecombe on Monday and Tuesday.

Wilson Hunt 4, Northern Nash 0

Northern Nash lost a home Big East Conference match.

The Knights (3-8, 0-5) are back in action on Friday with a 5 p.m. start at Rocky Mount High.
