Prep roundup: Gryphons baseball snaps skid with win at Tarboro

The Rocky Mount High baseball team defeated Tarboro, 11-2, on Monday.

Sam Mills earned the win for the Gryphons (9-4), who snapped a two-game losing streak with the road win. Kyle Rich led a lineup that collected 13 hits with two of his own, to go with two RBIs.

Tarboro (6-7) evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, but didn’t keep pace with RMH which scored eight runs over the next three innings and two more in the seventh.

The Gryphons travel to rival Northern Nash for a 7 p.m. start on Tuesday. The Vikings resume Coastal Plains Conference play at 6 p.m. Friday at South Creek.


Rocky Mount Academy 30, New Life Christian Academy 1

Rocky Mount Academy moved to 7-0 this season with a blowout win over the visiting Warriors (1-3) in non-conference play.

Emily Winstead hit two grand slams, and Ashley Wright threw a complete game. The Eagles had 15 hits as a team in the win.

RMA has two more games this week, both NCISAA Coastal Conference tests, starting on the road on Tuesday at Halifax Academy and another on Thursday at home against Harrells Christian Academy.

Boys’ golf

Southern Nash fourth at Northgreen

Southern Nash fired a 400 and finished in fourth place on Monday during a Big East Conference match held at Northgreen Country Club in Rocky Mount.

Winner Wilson Hunt finished with a score of 340, with Wilson Fike (345) and Franklinton (379) rounding out the top three. Northern Nash (407) and Rocky Mount High (519) finished fifth and sixth.

Firebirds freshman Carson Winstead had a top 10 finish, a three-way tie for eighth with a score of 91.

Northern Nash placed two golfers in the top 10 as Chance Puckett led the Knights with a seventh-place finish after carding a 90, and Josh Miller was part of the eighth-place tie with Winstead and Franklinton’s Sam Gupton with a 91.

Fike’s Jake Herring won by eight strokes with a 71.

Girls’ soccer

SouthWest Edgecombe 6, Bear Grass Charter 1

SouthWest Edgecombe (6-2) won its second consecutive game by overpowering the host Bears in the second half.

After scoring twice in the first half and taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, the Cougars scored four goals in the second half to seal the non-conference victory. SWE is scheduled to play two Eastern Plains Conference games this week; the Cougars on Tuesday are at Wilson Beddingfield, and home on Thursday against North Johnston.

Rocky Mount Academy 7, Harrells Christian Academy 0

Rocky Mount Academy (8-2, 5-1) earned a non-conference home win. The Eagles scored three goals in the first half, then poured in four more in the second half. They have outscored opponents 22-3 over the current four-match win streak.
