The Northern Nash boys’ basketball team completed a third consecutive undefeated season in the 3-A Big East Conference with Friday’s 58-55 win over host Wilson Hunt.
The Knights (22-1, 10-0) have won 22 games in a row after losing the season opener on the road to Pinecrest, a Class 4-A program. Northern Nash seniors who played at the varsity level as sophomores have gone 30-0 in conference over the past three seasons.
This one wasn’t easy as Northern Nash trailed throughout much of the first half as the Warriors (13-8, 5-5) held leads at the end of the first quarter (19-15) and halftime (28-24).
Northern Nash went on to outscore Hunt 23-11 in the third quarter, and held onto the lead late in the fourth.
The Knights own the top overall seed and a bye in the first round of the Big East Conference tournament, which begins Monday.
SouthWest Edgecombe 62
Wilson Beddingfield 59
SouthWest Edgecombe earned a home Eastern Plains Conference win on a game-winning shot.
Freshman Zay Mayo hit a 3-pointer that broke the tie and sent the Cougars (12-12, 5-5) to the victory.
Despite the win, the Cougars finished third in the Eastern Plains Conference. They needed help in the form of a Nash Central loss in order to grab the second spot via tiebreaker, but the Bulldogs pulled off a home win over North Johnston to finish 6-4 in the conference.
Wilson Hunt 43
Northern Nash 41
The Knights dropped their final Big East Conference game of the season. It was the fourth loss in a row for Northern Nash (9-12, 5-5).
