Friday's prep roundup: Rocky Mount Academy baseball wins big at Patriot Invitational

The Rocky Mount Academy baseball team, playing in the Faith Christian Patriot Invitational, scored two runs in the first and three apiece in the third and fourth for a season-opening, 12-3, victory over Freedom Christian Academy on Friday.

For the Eagles, Thomas Griffin led the way with three RBI and two hits in four at-bats. Griffin Wingfield added two RBI, while Woodall Rose and Ethan Davis had two hits each.

Davis pitched the first 3 1/3 innings and Wingfield and Will Stewart split the other 3 2/3. They allowed four hits combined.

RMA plays again at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Patriot Invitational.

South Johnston 6, Rocky Mount 1: After mounting their first winning streak in the early going of the season, the Gryphons were bested at home against South Johnston, and now sit at 2-3 on the season. They’ll have the weekend off and resume play next Wednesday at Greenville Rose at 5 p.m.


West Johnston 21, Northern Nash 5: The Knights collected 11 hits in the loss, but couldn’t find a way to keep pace with the visiting Wildcats.

Northern Nash answered a six-run top of the first by West Johnston with four runs in the bottom half, but could only muster another run in the fourth. Alyssa Day struck out six batters in five innings for the Knights.

At the plate, Hannah Evans had three hits for the Knights.

Boys tennis

Kinston Parrott Academy 9, Rocky Mount Academy 0: The Eagles dropped to 0-2 on the season with a straight-set home loss.

Each of the nine matches were won by the Patriots in straight sets.
