Tarboro High’s Brenna Bryant won the NCHSAA 1-A girls’ tennis championship on Saturday. Bryant defeated Emma Bost of Gray Stone Day, 6-2, 6-4. Bryant finished the season with a 22-0 record and is the Vikings’ first individual state tennis champion.
“She has put her energy all year on winning the state championship,” Tarboro coach Jamie Willoughby said. “The last month she has zeroed her focus on putting herself in position to win. I’m proud to see her win it.”
Willoughby said the first two games of the match were lengthy as Bryant adjusted to her opponent, a hard-hitting freshman who hit the ball low over the net. Bryant adjusted and dealt Bost her first defeat of the season.
The year was redemption for Bryant, who attended Rocky Mount High two years ago but had to sit out last year after transferring back to Tarboro High.
