People throughout the Twin Counties have an opportunity to help clean up the area
The Twin Counties Big Sweep, organized each year by Keep America Beautiful of Nash & Edgecombe Counties, launched Sept. 15 and runs through Oct. 15. It’s a great way for civic clubs, neighborhood groups, churches, schools, businesses, families and individuals to help make a difference in the community.
As part of the monthlong cleanup effort, the Twin Counties Big Sweep Challenge is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 7 in Rocky Mount and Tarboro.
Volunteers for this one-day land and river cleanup event are asked to meet at 8 a.m. at either the boat ramp at Battle Park in Rocky Mount or at Shiloh’s landing at 2233 U.S. 258 North in Tarboro. Trash bags, gloves and safety vests will be provided.
Besides being an eyesore, litter hurts the environment, contaminates the water supply, hampers business recruitment and tourism and harms local wildlife. Litter can last for years along local roads and waterways before decomposing, and its very presence can encourage even more litter.
Last year, nearly 300 volunteers participated in the Twin Counties Big Sweep, collecting an estimated 3,080 pounds of trash and debris.
Here’s hoping this year’s participation and trash collection total will be even bigger.
We encourage everyone to participate in the Twin Counties Big Sweep and do their part in helping to beautify the Twin Counties.
