The dog days of summer take a toll on us in more ways than you might think.

As folks look for a comfortable chair in an air-conditioned room, they don’t always think about the needs of others. But the American Red Cross is in critical need of blood donors.

Giving blood in July and August can mean a big difference for hospital patients eager to return home to their families. It also can be a lifesaver at a time when blood supplies traditionally run lower than normal.

To encourage donors, the American Red Cross will mail $5 Target gift cards to anyone who donates blood between now and Aug. 31.

For a list of upcoming blood donation oppottunities in the Twin Counties, check the Life page in the Rocky Mount Telegram each Tuesday. We print a list of times and locations weekly.

Giving blood takes very little time but provides so much for the recipient. As summer winds down and we start preparing for school and fall activities, take a few minutes to offer something to someone whose health isn’t as strong as yours.

You’ll pick up a gift card if you do. And you’ll be offering a precious gift to someone in critical need.
