Vera Morris, the former Miss North Carolina USA 1998, will be a guest speaker Tuesday at N.C. A&T State University.

Morris, the daughter of Willie and Glessa Morris of Nashville, will speak with the students from the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and Fashion Merchandising and Design.

Morris, who lives in Cary, is a consultant at Yardi Systems Inc. and a part-time model.

She graduated from Northern Nash High School in 1993. She received an associate degree in 1995 from Peace College in Raleigh and a bachelor's degree in speech communications in 1998 from the University of Georgia.

Morris fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming Miss North Carolina USA in 1998. She was awarded the Miss Congeniality award at the Miss USA 1998 pageant. Throughout her reign, she received modeling and acting opportunities and appeared on "The Wheel of Fortune" television show.

In 2008, she was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and became an advocate for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, where she raised over $9,000. Her hopes are to not only continue raising money but to continue reaching out and helping make Crohn's disease something more widely talked about. She also became an ambassador for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, in which she helped raise awareness about breast cancer.

Early in 2018, Morris began modeling again. In April 2018, she joined Models for Charity, which raises money through fashion. She has modeled for Shop Swagger, Autumn and Avery, Sophie and Mollies, The Root Collective and Thomas Lee Sheets Inc. She also has modeled in several fashion shows, including Forever Bridal Fashion Shows and the Charlotte International Fashion Week Fashion Show.

Morris also was recently selected to grace the cover of the September 2018 special edition of International Face Magazine and was on the 2019 winter edition of Cary Living Magazine. On April 3, she signed with Marilyn's Agency in Greensboro.

Her hobbies include Buti Yoga and Barre Pilates. She also enjoys motivational speaking about how to overcome obstacles and regain control of your life. She also loves volunteering, judging pageants, boutique shopping and spending time with family and friends.
