City to celebrate public works employees

The more than 200 men and women in the Public Works and Water Resources Departments who build and maintain the infrastructure of the city of Rocky Mount work hard each day to keep the city moving forward.

In recognition of their efforts, the city of Rocky Mount, in conjunction with the American Public Works Association, will celebrate Public Works Week from Sunday to May 25.

APWA announced “It Starts Here” as the theme for the 2019 National Public Works Week. The theme represents the many facets of modern civilization that grow out of the efforts put forth by the public works professionals across North America.

“Public Works Week is our opportunity to honor and celebrate the men and women who contribute so significantly to the quality of life in this community through their hard work and commitment to excellence in maintaining our transportation network, stormwater system, water and wastewater systems and equipment fleet. Their work also includes the delivery of solid waste services and enforcement of minimum housing code and nuisance abasement,” Director of Public Works Brad Kerr said. “This work is vital to maintaining a sustainable community and to the health, safety and well-being of the people of the city of Rocky Mount.Wethank them for a job well done.”

The city of Rocky Mount will celebrate Public Works Week by hosting the annual Public Works Equipment Show from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday and will give the publican opportunity to understand the types of equipment used to maintain sidewalks, collect solid waste and more. Various tools and equipment used in all eight divisions will be on hand.
