The Rocky Mount Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. teamed up with the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of Bennett College Alumnae Association during the chapter’s monthly “Kocktails and Konversations” networking event at Tap1918 at the Rocky Mount Mills, to support the historical black university faced with a $5 million price tag during its #I Stand With Bennett campaign to raise funds to avoid possible closure.
Members of the fraternity, Social Chair Eric McKnight, Polemarch Dr.Donnell Brown and Vice Polemarch James Lyons II brainstormed an idea to assist the school by reaching out to fellow Bennett Alumnae Alice Schenall. The idea spawned from the chapter’s initiative of networking with a purpose. By adding a theme at each month’s networking event to highlight various causes in the Twin Counties it helped in creating partnerships with other organizations in and around the Twin Counties.
This particular event raised over $300 in addition to the owners of Tap1918, who contributed a separate donation. It was a great event that helped to make a difference in a very impactful way.
Since this event, Bennett College through generous donations locally and nationally exceeded the amount it needed to avoid closure.
