The Rocky Mount Event Center kicked off the new year by hosting its first volleyball tournament, Crown Town Tournament: Carolina Kick-Off, with Carolina Union Volleyball Club.

The Carolina Union Volleyball Club has a passion for making volleyball the driver in providing individuals an opportunity to learn life skills through sport. Its mission is “to develop individuals to be passionate about life through volleyball. We are dedicated to training players at every level of the game. When players understand how to perform the essential skills at a high level the game becomes more enjoyable and becomes a life-long passion.”

The tournament took place Jan. 5-6, hosting ages 12-18 girls and 16-18 boys. The doors opened at 7 a.m. to eventually house a packed facility, welcoming over 70 teams and over 2,500 spectators to the state-of-the-art facility in downtown Rocky Mount.

The event brought in various teams from around the region, including 43 teams from at least 102 miles away and 7 from at least 60 miles away. Local teams also participated such as the Wilson Elite 16U Volleyball Team, who won the Silver Bracket on Sunday. The teams stayed at local hotels such as Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn.

"We enjoyed the first ever volleyball tournament at the RMEC. It is a great venue that allows for an exceptional playing and viewing experience,” Tournament Director John Brannon said. “The reasonably priced concessions, as well as the play areas for kids, only added to the appeal of the tournament. Spectators continuously commented about how beautiful the facility was. We look forward to coming back in March."
