Blaylock celebrates 100th birthday

Sue Myers Blaylock was honored on the occasion of her 100th birthday on Dec. 30 at Avalon Baptist Church.
After some of her favorite hymns and choir selections, Betty Jo Shepheard, U.S. Sen. Richard Burr's area representative, presented Blaylock with a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C,. in honor of her 100th birthday. Shepheard also presented her with a Certificate of Authenticity that the flag was flown in her honor at the request of Burr. Shepheard also read a congratulatory letter from Burr.
The Rev. Joe Price, pastor of the church, presided over the celebration and read a letter from President and Melania Trump congratulating Blaylock.
The congregation adjourned to the church fellowship hall where a covered dish lunch was provided by church members. Pictures of Blaylock at various stages of her life were shown while lunch was served.
In addition to many of Blaylock's church family, present for the celebration were family members from Vero Beach, Florida, St. Louis, Missouri, Waynesville, Wilmington, Raleigh, Wilson and Zebulon.
Blaylock was born Dec. 31, 1918, near Lexington. She was the middle of eleven children born to J.W. and Anna Myers. She graduated valedictorian of the Reeds High School Class of 1935.
She married Seaford Blaylock on April 4, 1942. They had six children: Sharon B. Armstrong, Betty B. Tippette, Layne B. Harper, Edwin, Kent and Roger Blaylock. Her husband and Layne, Eddie and Roger are deceased.
Blaylock and her husband farmed all of their married life. They owned Shell Bank Farm on N.C. 97 between Rocky Mount and Leggett until they sold the farm and retired in 1984.
