The Enfield Peanut Festival Committee recently awarded its first scholarship to Tyree Dion Silver at an Enfield Town Board meeting.

Delores Ward, co-chairwoman of the committee, awarded the scholarship and said the Peanut Festival Committee plans to give these scholarships out annually to deserving students. The scholarships will be awarded to students interested in pursuing their education in agriculture.

Silver is a graduate of Southeast Halifax High School and is currently enrolled full time at Halifax Community College while also holding a full-time job at Smithfield’s in Wilson. He developed an early interest in gardening and maintained a garden in his own back yard for many years. The extra produce from the garden was often given to neighbors. He is also an active member of the First Baptist Church of Enfield.

After completing courses at Halifax Community College, Silver hopes to enroll in the agriculture program at N.C. State University.

This year’s Enfield Peanut Festival took place on Oct. 5-6.
