The Terpsichorean Club, comprised of men from the Raleigh area, was formed in the 1920s to sponsor an annual statewide debutante ball. The event has been held yearly since 1923 with the exception of the World War II years.

Young women were selected for presentation by more than 200 nominators statewide, and approval of the nominations is made by club members. The women were selected based on the contributions their families have made to the economic, cultural, social and civic life of the state.

During the ball weekend, eight functions were held to honor the debutantes and their families and their escorts.

William Hargrave McElroy chaired this year’s ball.
