Grads bid farewell to Tar River Academy

A total of 43 Tar River Academy seniors turned their tassels during the June 8 graduation ceremony that was held in the school auditorium.
The graduates have exciting futures to look forward to as 18 will attend two-year colleges, four will enlist in the military, 20 will enter the workforce and one will attend a four-year college. Shaleiyah Smith was named class valedictorian and Daquan Batts was named the salutatorian.
During the ceremony, Principal Leon Dupree gave the opening remarks and encouraged graduates to continue working to achieve their goals and dreams.
“Be motivated by your story and continue your goals in life. Someone expects you to be successful,” Dupree said.
Valedictorian Shaleiyah Smith thanked Principal Brian Hopkins of Northern High School for believing in her.
“Everyone has a calling in life, figure out what yours is and make it happen,” she said.
Superintendent Dr. Shelton Jefferies congratulated every senior as they crossed the stage.
“I hope the excitement they feel today will carry them throughout life. I know they have bright futures ahead of them,” Jefferies said.
