Young musicians earn accolades at PianOlympics

Area piano students recently competed for honors during the 33rd annual PianOlympics at the Church of the Good Shepherd and Englewood Presbyterian Church.
PianOlympics drew 46 young musicians, who competed at Good Shepherd in seven skill levels. Each student performed two memorized compositions and was judged on his or her musical accomplishment.
Gold, silver and bronze medal winners and honorable mention students were chosen. The winners performed at an honors recital at Englewood Presbyterian. Winners were presented their awards following the recital.
The judges were Beth Credle of Nashville and Lori Mizelle of Whitakers.
The competition was sponsored by the Rocky Mount Piano Teachers' Association. The teachers whose students competed are Pam Cameron, Lawrence Goering, Mary Ruth Johnson, Peggy King, and Angie Ruffin, all of Rocky Mount; Lydia Bardin and Kim Handley, both of Wilson; and Sally Moseley of Tarboro.
Chairwoman for this year was Mary Ruth Johnson, and the vice chairs were Lawrence Goering, Kim Handley and Tom Parker.
In each division, the winners and their teachers were:
■ Elementary 1A — DeNaira Whitaker, gold, Goering.
■ Elementary 1B — Ethan Kim, gold, Bardin; Derian Caudl, Jr., silver, Goering; Lilly Hoskins, bronze, Bardin; and Britt Gaynor, honorable mention, Goering.
■ Elementary 1C — Katie Knight, gold, Moseley; Emma Kate Davis, silver, Moseley; Emma Townsend Satterfield, bronze, Bardin; Katherine Bailon, honorable mention, Johnson; and Qianqian (Chin-Chin) Huang, honorable mention, Bardin.
■ Elementary 2 — Lachlan Vester, gold, Goering; Maddie Hart, silver, Johnson; Parker Allen, bronze, Bardin; Carmen Parker, honorable mention, Handley; and Janzen Haynes, honorable mention, King.
■ Intermediate 1 — Kate Hoskins, gold, Bardin; Mason Deal, silver, Goering; Reed Luper, bronze, King; Lottie Parker, honorable mention, Cameron; and Ana Katherine Weeks, honorable mention, Goering.
■ Intermediate 2 — Jabez Haynes, gold, King; and Jack Wilson, silver, Handley.
■ Senior 1 — Vivian Rogers, gold, Bardin; and Eden Curtiss, silver, Goering.
Lewis Spivey, a Rocky Mount registered piano technician, awarded a summer music camp scholarship to Eden Curtiss, a student of Goering.
