Rocky Mount will get a taste of the New York Theatre Ballet when a performance of “The Seasons” takes the stage tonight at the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences.

Choreographed by the well-known British choreographer, Richard Alston, and set to music composed by John Cage, the ballet takes the audience through the four seasons via dance and music.

“The New York Theatre Ballet is touring our region and will make Rocky Mount a stop along the way,” said Sheila Long, recreation services supervisor at the Imperial Centre.

The ballet is scheduled to be viewed by about 550 school children during the day. The public is invited to see the second performance at the Imperial Centre at 6:30 p.m. A reception will be held prior to the evening performance at 6 p.m.

Diana Byer, founder and artistic director or the New York Theatre Ballet, said the dancers performing in Rocky Mount are members of the New York Theatre Ballet Company, now in its 39th year.

“We’ve got eight dancers travelling for the performance in Rocky Mount and also a show in Wilson,” Byer said.

Long said students will get to meet the professional ballet dancers and participate in answer and question sessions.

“We’re excited to bring this unique opportunity to our citizens and celebrate the performing arts. Promoting performing arts and exposing our youth is a priority for our organization ” Long added.

The New York Theatre Ballet company has produced dozens of classic masterpieces and contemporary ballets over the past 39 years.
