Simpson set to appear at powwow

Brooke Simpson of “The Voice” fame will be appearing at the annual Haliwa-Saponi Powwow this weekend in Hollister.

Simpson will perform at 5 p.m. Saturday.

This will be the 53rd annual spring Haliwa-Saponi Powwow, an event held each year to celebrate the tribe’s recognition by the N.C. General Assembly in 1965. The powwow includes several dance contests, a drum contest, an art contest, traditional American Indian food and crafts for sale.

The event will run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Daily admission is based on age and children six years old and under are free. Adult tickets are $8 at the gate.

The powwow will be held at 130 Haliwa Saponi Trail in Hollister.
