Rocky Mount Preparatory School teamed with Global Partners for Fathers and Families on Nov. 4 to host the Male Achievement Conference in Rocky Mount, featuring former NFL Player Marques Ogden as keynote speaker.

More than 360 youth and adults attended the conference from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia.

Sessions targeted 3rd – 12th grade male students and their parents/caregivers providing information with the following goals in mind:

■ Increase graduation rates for male students;

■ Decrease violence among youth; and

■ Provide support to parents/caregivers raising sons.

Rocky Mount Prep staff and a committee of local professionals volunteered to coordinate the conference. Zaxby’s of Rocky Mount served as conference title sponsor along with support from 15 other local businesses, including Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools, Coca Cola, Cummins, BB&T, Choice 92.1 (media partner), and The Boys and Girls Club of the Tar River Region, to name a few.

Additional features of the conference included free neckties and haircuts for all attendees, which were provided with support from barbering students at Edgecombe Community College.

“This conference is a perfect example of what happens when our community, schools, and businesses join together,” said Todd Pipkin of Rocky Mount Preparatory Academy. Plans are underway for a similar effort in 2018.
