Astronomy club to host events
From Staff Reports
Thursday, April 20, 2017
The Tar River Astronomy Club is sponsoring a Statewide Star Party at 7 p.m. Friday and a Solar Viewing at 11 a.m. Saturday, both weather permitting at City Lake Park.
The Statewide Star Party and Solar Viewing are just two of the more than 50 observing events taking place around the state that are part of the N.C. Science Festival. Hosted by the staff of the Imperial Centre’s Cummins Planetarium and volunteers from the Tar River Astronomy Club, an array of several telescopes will be set up and pointed at a variety of celestial targets including the Beehive and Pleiades star clusters and the giant planet Jupiter and four of its largest moons. This is the best opportunity this year to observe Jupiter, as it is now at its closest approach to Earth. Observing gets underway at sunset.
Friday’s event also will feature free April Sky Charts, constellation tours and other activities. For more information, call 972-1266 during business hours.
