RMA students win art awards

Seven students from Rocky Mount Academy recently participated in the annual Scholastic Arts Awards program at Barton College in Wilson.
Malone Bondy, Barrett Eidson, Caroline Gay, Renate Ma, Elias Moore, Logan Moss and Caitlyn Vester were among students from 62 counties who participated in the Eastern/Central North Carolina Region awards program.
The Scholastic Arts Awards is a national art and writing competition. Regional winners are awarded gold and silver keys and honorable mentions.
Vester received a Gold Key for her piece "Paint Against Time Cutout" and an honorable mention for her piece "Roaring Lion." Bondy received a Silver Key for her painting "Yellow Bicycle." Eidson received a Silver Key for her photograph "Buildings From Brooklyn." These pieces will be on display through Feb. 24 in the Barton Art Galleries.
The Scholastic Arts Awards program, created for middle- and high-school students, is designed to encourage student achievement, recognize and applaud fine arts teachers and emphasize the importance of the visual arts in school curriculum.
This year, there were 3,445 entries and 98 portfolios from 131 schools in the Eastern/Central North Carolina Region.
