Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools recently announced four Global Ready school sites are slated to begin programming during the 2017-18 school year.

The four sites include Bailey Elementary, Coopers Elementary, Middlesex Elementary and Winstead Avenue Elementary. A global ready school is one that thoughtfully and intentionally incorporates global content into the grade level curriculum. Students in a global school setting will gain superb knowledge of world geography and a greater understanding of many diverse populations, civilizations and cultures.

Teachers and staff at each school site already have begun the global transformation process in partnership with Visiting International Faculty based in Chapel Hill. Visiting International Faculty has over 30 years of experience partnering with multiple schools across North Carolina in providing a quality international teaching staff, global ready programs and dual language/immersion programs. Teachers at the local global ready sites are participating in on-going professional development in order to change the look and feel of teaching and learning for students.

Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools also is implementing one dual language/immersion class at each of the four sites. Language immersion classes are an exciting option for parents who want their children to have the advantages of a rigorous academic program while also learning a second language. The language instituted in all of the dual language/immersion classes will be Spanish. Language immersion programs have been thoroughly studied and present a comprehensive body of research that demonstrates significant benefits for our students. Implementation of dual language/immersion classes will occur in annual phases beginning with kindergarten in 2017.

“Combining the Global Ready School concept with Dual Language Immersion provides an innovative and rigorous learning environment for our students,” said Eddie Hicks, director for curriculum support.
