Rochelle Small-Toney: City to kick off summer events

Spring is here, and so are the many events presented by PNC and spearheaded by the Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation department.
May 18 is the date for the kickoff of Lawn Chair Theater, a special night of fun for the family with live music, bounce houses, activities and vendors. Hosted by the city of Rocky Mount and the Rocky Mount Rotary Club, the first Lawn Chair Theater will be held at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex starting at 6 p.m. and featuring the Disney movie, “Cars 3.” The movie will begin at 8:30 p.m. This event also serves as a catalyst for the Tackle the Tar 5K obstacle course taking place the following day at the same site starting at 9 a.m.
The Lawn Chair Theatre on May 18 is the first in a series of family-friendly movies on the lawn. Starting June 15, Lawn Chair Theatre will take place every other Friday on the Imperial Centre lawn through July 27.
The highly anticipated Downtown Live! outdoor summer concert series will return May 24 to the Imperial Centre lawn with music from the Legacy Motown Revue. Downtown Live! is happening every other Thursday through Sept. 13. Other scheduled acts include the Tams, Jim Quick and Coastline and the Embers featuring Craig Woolard, among others. Downtown Live! attendees may get to the Imperial Centre as early as 5 p.m. Music starts at 6 p.m.
The Juneteenth Community Empowerment Festival, hosted by the Juneteenth Committee, is another way the city of Rocky Mount is bringing more family fun to the area. Juneteenth is a two-day event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 1 and 11:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 2 in front of the Imperial Centre. This year, Councilmember Reuben Blackwell will serve as the keynote speaker. Not only will this event feature live music from regional and national artists, it will host a bike rodeo, car show, performances from the Kenya Safari Acrobats and more.

The Eastern Carolina BBQ Throw Down, which draws visitors to Rocky Mount from various states, will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Oct. 12 and 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 13 The BBQ Throw Down will feature music, cook teams and great barbecue.
Downtown events will continue with the Independence Day Celebration on July 3, First Friday starting Nov. 2, the Christmas Parade on Dec. 2 and Winter Wonderland on Dec. 9.
