I absolutely love the holidays, including the decorations and holiday festivities, spending time with family and friends, along with the congenial atmosphere that you will often find this time of the year.
That’s why I was pleased when staff informed me of the many Holiday Happenings taking place in Rocky Mount. I am even more excited to relay this information to you about these wholesome, family-friendly activities.
Rocky Mount’s Holiday Happenings start Nov. 30 at the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences. At 7:30 p.m., the center will begin its collaboration of the classic, “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and a musical performance from the annual Christmas Chorus.
The family is invited to see the stage adaptation of the classic animated television special with Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the Peanuts Gang discovering the true meaning of Christmas. Participants will also have the opportunity to enjoy the sounds of the holiday season with a special performance by the Christmas Chorus. The 49th annual Christmas Chorus and “A Charlie Brown Christmas” will also be held at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 to Dec. 2 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 3
Festivities will continue Dec. 1 with the lighting of the Imperial Centre Christmas tree and burial of the city’s time capsule. Starting at 6 p.m., the public is invited to this Christmas-themed First Friday event featuring carriage rides, Santa and snow in the Imperial Centre lobby every half hour, from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. While First Friday will consist of several Christmas activities, the event will also include crafts, vendors, laser and planetarium shows, kids activities, free admission to the latest exhibit, “Ocean Bound,” a local food truck, bounce houses, live music in the arts galleries, a magic juggling program, and much more. First Friday has also expanded to the Booker T. Theatre, and on Dec. 1, the Young Professionals of the Twin Counties will host a lip sync battle.
The signature Rocky Mount Christmas Parade will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 3 in downtown Rocky Mount. This year’s theme will be Down Home Classic Christmas. Join us for floats, live bands, Santa and more. This year’s parade marshal will be Ed Crump of ABC 11.
Holiday Happenings continue from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Imperial Centre with Winter Wonderland, comprised of a day of wintertime activities, like music, children’s activities, carriage rides through downtown and a visit from Santa. During Winter Wonderland, visitors may also enjoy snow in the main lobby every hour.
Seniors are also invited to the Christmas Lights tour from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Dec. 14. Enjoy a guided bus tour of the sights and lights of the season. There will also be a holiday program after the tour with desert, coffee and entertainment. Sign-up for the Christmas Lights tour must be completed by Dec. 7.
For more information on the Christmas Lights tour, call 252-972-1566. For more information on all of the city’s remaining Holiday Happenings, call 252-972-1151, or visit www.rockymountnc.gov .
I am also happy to announce that the city of Rocky Mount has added a Christmas tree and decorative wreaths in the Battleboro community as a result of a request from their neighborhood association. Please stop by and take a look at the area, and please enjoy the city’s many Holiday Happenings.
