NCWC softball receives awards; baseball kicks off tournament

The N.C. Wesleyan softball team placed four players on the USA South Conference first team, announced this week.
The conference-champions Bishops (20-13, 12-4) also had a second-team selection in catcher Kayla Molivas, and head coach John Brackett was named coach of the year. NCWC won 20 games for the second consecutive season, and three times in the past four seasons.
Bishops first baseman Bryona Knight was named to the first team, along with utility player Summer Phillips, outfielder Hannah Ivester, and pitcher Beth Braswell.
Braswell hit .323 with a team-best 8 home runs and 30 RBIs. Braswell also led the team with 12 wins in the circle. She finished with one save, 116 strikeouts and a 2.08 ERA over 114 innings.
Baseball opens conference tournament
The NCWC baseball team begins the USA South Conference tournament with a 3:30 p.m. start on Thursday against Huntingdon in LaGrange, Ga.
The Bishops (22-14, 12-9) are 4-6 over their last 10 games, and are on a two-game losing streak. NCWC finished sixth in the conference, and will likely need to win the tournament to earn a postseason berth.
