Many local kids from Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tar River Region were able to head back to school this year with a new backpack full of supplies thanks to local U.S. Cellular associates.

For the fourth year, U.S. Cellular associates from the greater Rocky Mount area have made personal donations of backpacks and other school items. This year’s program ensured 25 area kids have the supplies they need to head back to school.

“Our associates participate in company sponsored events with Boys & Girls Club of the Tar River Region throughout the year focusing on STEM projects and other educational programs,” said Jeremy Taylor, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in eastern North Carolina. “What makes this project so special is that our local Rocky Mount associates are making these donations. They get to know the kids here at the Club and want to help not only through company initiatives but with donations of their own time and resources.”

U.S. Cellular donated $10,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tar River Region earlier this year. In addition to the donation, U.S. Cellular has sponsored a Black History Month Art Competition with kids at the Rocky Mount Club this past February as well as celebrated Earth Day with the kids by revitalizing the Club’s vegetable garden in May.

U.S. Cellular has a longstanding commitment to the community and education. The company’s local $10,000 donation to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tar River Region was part of a $1.3 million donation to clubs across the country and $76,500 in North Carolina.

This is the third year U.S. Cellular and the youth organizations have collaborated to prepare youth to explore career opportunities and be ready to join the workforce. The company has contributed more than $14.5 million to K-12 education since 2009.

In 2018, U.S. Cellular associates volunteered at more than 200 events and are committed to volunteering 35,000 hours in its local communities again in 2019.
