Local resident Bob “Boo” Perry didn’t hide his excitement about the new Harbor Freight Tools store that opened Tuesday at Sutters Creek Plaza in Rocky Mount.

Perry, who is retired, said he has been a regular customer of other Harbor Freight Tools. Perry purchased about $500 in tools that consisted of a ladder, floor jack, LED solar security lights, trailer tie down straps, hand gloves and other items. Perry said he saved more than $100 by using coupons on his purchases.

“It’s like a toy store for men,” Perry joked. “Instead of Toys “R” Us, this is like Men’s “R” Us. I’m thrilled that they’re here. I’m a kind of guy that has been working with my hands my whole life as an automotive mechanic, truck mechanic and building machinery. I do all my stuff at home, so to be able to get good tools at a really reasonable price is definitely worth the trip to come here.”

Perry’s sentiments were echoed by Bailey resident Vince Sievert, who said he spent about $150 on tools at the store. Sievert said in the past, he traveled to Harbor Freight Tools’ locations in Raleigh and Winterville to buy tools and hardware items.

“This is so much closer for me, and everything that you need for a shop is in here,” Perry said. “I wouldn’t say if you’re operating a professional shop that this would be the place to go if you’re using these tools every single day because they’re going to wear out. But I would say this is good for the hobbyist.”

Joe Pisarik and his wife, Connie Pisarik, also joined Perry and Sievert in coming to the new Harbor Freight Tools store in Rocky Mount. The Pisariks, who came a few miles away from Sharpsburg, loaded about $200 worth of items into their vehicle.

Joe Pisarik said they saved on purchases because of their discount, while Connie added that her husband is planning to go get his truck and come back to buy some more items.

“We had been waiting for this store for some time now, and this is certainly going to be big asset to Rocky Mount,” Joe Pisarik said. “They may not have the best tools in the world, but they will certainly get you by and at prices that you’re not going to beat.”

Harbor Freight Tools was founded in North Hollywood, Calif. in 1977 and is now headquartered in Calabasas, Calif. It’s known as the leading discount tool retailer in the United States. The company stocks more than 7,000 items in categories including automotive, air and power tools, shop equipment and hand tools.

Harbor Freight Tools has more than 780 stores nationwide, and Rocky Mount represents its 26th store in North Carolina.

Alan Matthews, director of business recruitment at the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the city of Rocky Mount, said Harbor Freight Tools is a welcome addition to the local business community.

“Harbor Freight has the ability to help us attract consumers from outside our city limits to our current 300,000 regional draw,” Matthews said. “We will continue our recruitment efforts to expand as a regional market. It’s our desire that all businesses will enjoy a prosperous holiday season and hope that Harbor Freight will certainly enjoy the benefits of opening prior to the holiday season.”

Collin Ozar, marketing manager for Harbor Freight Tools, said the store will employ between 35 to 40 workers. Harbor Freight Tools currently is hiring for positions. Interested candidates can apply at www.harborfreightjobs.com.

Harbor Freight Tools is located at 538 Sutters Creek Blvd. The store is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
